Are bamboo products environmentally friendly?
What is Bamboo?
Bamboo is a plant native to China that is well-known for its rapid growth rate of up to three feet per day. While it originated in China, it is also grown in many other regions, such as Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa. The Western world has only recently become aware of what a fantastic alternative this raw material is compared with other materials, and since then, bamboo fabric has been all the rage.
Bamboo can be harvested by either selective cutting or clear-cutting, with the former being a more sustainable option. After harvesting, the plant undergoes a series of processes, including removing the outer layer of the stalk, boiling, and milling into a pulp before it is spun into yarn or turned into the fabric using mechanical or chemical processing. The resulting bamboo fabric is soft, lightweight, and durable, making it ideal for various products, such as bedding, mattresses, and pillows.
