What bed and mattress size is right for you?

Mattress Size Guide

Let’s help you choose your mattress

When it comes to getting bedtime perfect one of the biggest decisions you will have to make is choosing the size of your bed and mattress. Personal preferences aside, there are many things to consider. From the size of your bedroom and who you sleep with to your body shape, this easy-to-use guide dives into mattress dimensions and the questions that will help lead you towards the perfect fit.

Small Single

A small single is the shortest in terms of the width of all mattresses while offering the same length as a standard double. This could work for young children to those sleepers who are smaller in body shape. If you have a small bedroom this option would work well in maximising space. It can also be ideal for guest rooms. This mattress size would not work if you tend to move around in your sleep as you may find the short width can be limiting in which case a standard single or even a small double could be a better fit.

DIMENSIONS: 190 x 75 x 27 cm (2'6 x 6'3")

Single

A single-sized mattress works very well for young children and small adults. This mattress size is also popular for those with a small bedroom, guest rooms or sleepers that do not move around in their sleep. This would not offer enough space if you sleep with a partner, in which case a small double would be the smallest mattress worth considering. If you prefer to sleep alone, which 50% of UK couples now choose to do, two single or small doubles (if you have the space) could help give you both a better night’s sleep.

DIMENSIONS: 190 x 90 x 27 cm (3' x 6'3)

Small Double

A small double mattress offers significantly more width than a single (an extra 30cm) and is still a popular choice for single sleepers. The extra width can accommodate any movement in the night and is ideal for those with a slightly bigger body shape. While couples can try a small double, it is likely they will be more comfortable with a double or king size. Disturbances from partners are one of the biggest causes of lack of sleep and this is best avoided by choosing a bigger mattress with exceptional motion control technology.

DIMENSIONS: 190 x 120 x 27 cm (4' x 6'3")

Double

A double mattress adds another 15cm to the width and is a popular choice for both couples and single sleepers. For those with a bigger bedroom, a double sized bed can balance the space and offer a comfortable amount of wiggle room. One problem couples can experience with doubles is overheating, which can affect up to 41% of sleepers. Having the extra space of a king size mattress or super king can allow more  relief from each other’s body heat and reduce the effects of motion transferif either of you move around. When it comes to couples and mattress sizes, in many cases bigger is better.

DIMENSIONS: 190 x 135 x 27 cm (4'6 x 6'3")

King Size

Bedroom size permitting, a king size mattress is a popular choice for both single sleepers and those that sleep with a partner. Single sleepers rejoice in the extra space with 150cm to starfish and wiggle around in. Partners find bigger size mattresses can help to prevent disturbances throughout the night – giving them both room to get comfortable and enjoy a good night’s sleep. Once they have decided who gets what side of the bed!

DIMENSIONS: 200 x 150 x 27 cm (5' x 6'6")

Super King Size

This super sized mattress size is ideal for sleepers with a bigger body shape or who like to really move around from one side to the other. With many of us spending more time working from home, a super king size is perfect for bringing the laptop to bed! For couples, this is a popular solution to sharing a bed while both keeping their own space – and can prevent overheating and disturbances in the night from movement or even snoring. It is still important to choose a mattress with cooling features and advanced motion control to ensure the best night’s sleep!

DIMENSIONS: 200 x 180 x 27 cm (6' x 6'6")

Emperor Size

For those looking for maximum width in their mattress, the emperor is the best option offering a generous 200cm of room to roll around. The master of mattress sizes, the emperor will take up the most space in your bedroom though will likely make bed your favourite place to be. This is ideal for larger adults, couples who like their space and those that move around a lot in their sleep.

DIMENSIONS: 200 x 200 x 27 cm (6'6 x 6'6")

European Size Mattresses

European size mattresses offer slightly more length with their single, and both width and length with their double. A standard double is the most popular choice in the EU, making it slightly more suitable for couples and single sleepers looking for extra wiggle room than its UK counterpart offers.

  • EU Single: 200 x 90 x 27 cm (3' x 6'6")
  • EU Double: 200 x 140 x 27 cm (4'7 x 6'6")
  • EU King: 200 x 160 x 27 cm (5'3 x 6'6")

HELPFUL QUESTIONS:

How big is my bedroom?

First things first, unless you plan on moving house or switching rooms you need to think about what mattress size will best fit your bedroom. Checking your room dimensions and ensuring your desired mattress size leaves you enough room is essential. Sometimes you may choose to compromise a bit of space for a bigger mattress – but this depends on your lifestyle and what you use your bedroom for. Think these things through before placing your order.

What mattress best fits my body shape?

When it comes to body shape, we are all beautifully unique. It is worth considering body shape when choosing the size of your mattress. Taller sleepers, especially those over 6 feet tall, will be better suited to a king or super king as there won’t be any feet hanging over the edge. Consider how much width will best suit your body shape, as this will help determine what mattress size will give you the best night’s sleep.

Am I sharing a bed?

If you are sleeping with a partner (or a pet) you will want to consider a mattress size from a small double upwards. To determine whether to choose a small double, double, king or super king size all depends on personal preferences. Consider how much you move around, the space you both like and what will suit you both best in the long term. Many couples find a king or super king best suits their sleeping requirements.
