FAQ

When is Black Friday 2025, and does it last only one day?

Black Friday falls on Friday 28th November 2025. It’s a one-day holiday shopping event traditionally after Thanksgiving in the US. In recent years retailers have started Black Friday deals earlier or had an extended sale for the whole of the month.

What’s the difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and should I shop on both?

Cyber Monday occurs on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Created as a one-day online shopping event, the idea is to encourage sales on retailer websites. Black Friday is both in-store and online, and usually happens on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It is good to shop both, but strategically. Black Friday is best for large ticket items such as a laptop or household appliances, whereas Cyber Monday is better for small ticket items such as clothing. Look out for special online only deals on Cyber Monday. Some online retailers include Cyber Monday in their Black Friday sale, so you’ll have longer to shop around for the best online savings.

Why is it called Black Friday?

Dating as far back as 1924 in the US, originally an in-store event, there’s many interpretations as to why it is dubbed ‘Black Friday’. In the 1950s, it was coined ‘Black Friday’ by Philadelphia Police due to the chaos which ensued from bargain shoppers scrambling for products before they sold out. Historically a day which is termed, ‘black’ is when a calamity occurred. Despite attempts to change the name in the 1980s, it remained, indicative of the money made by the event; if your accounts are ‘in the black’ it means you’re in profit, as opposed to ‘in the red’.

How should I prepare for Black Friday shopping to get the best bargains?

To make the most out of Black Friday shopping, do your research. Find out when retailers are starting their deals, as they could be as soon as early November. Sign up to email newsletters and create accounts with your favourite brands, as you could get an invite to access their sale early. It’s important to set a budget and make a wishlist, separating which items are your ‘must-haves’, and items that are just ‘nice to have’. Compare deals with other retailers, so you get the best bargain.
