Eco-Friendly Fabric Compared: Bamboo vs. Flax Linen
Understanding the fabrics
Bamboo fabric and flax linen are two superstars of the sustainable fabric world. But what exactly are they, and where do they come from?
What is bamboo fabric?
Bamboo fabric comes from the well-known, fast-growing and incredibly eco-friendly bamboo plant. And how do those spindly bamboo stalks turn into a soft, luxurious fabric? To put it simply, the bamboo is crushed into a pulp which is then spun into fibres.
Bamboo fabric has many uses; you’ll find moisture-wicking bamboo socks and gym clothes, super absorbent bamboo towels, incredibly soft bamboo bedding and much more out there.
What is flax linen?
Flax is a flowering plant, also known as linseed – and flax linen is the fabric created when these plants are harvested. When the plant is pulled out of the ground it is done so in a way that maintains the natural fibres; they are then separated, cleaned, and spun into yarn. The resulting yarn is then either woven or knit into a fabric.
Linen is one of the oldest fabrics out there; there is evidence of it going back thousands of years. It was seen as a class symbol, valued for its hygiene and breathability. Flax linen has many uses; from clothing and bedding to curtains and upholstery, it’s a popular choice across the fabric industry.
