Of all the ways to spend the festive season, nothing beats snuggling into bed and watching a marathon of Christmas movies. Because let’s face it, it’s cold out there! While we all have our favourites, there’s always room for inspiration to festive up your flick list.

We have done our research to help get you well and truly in the mood for a very merry Christmas. Put away those phones and close the laptops, overworking can lead to burnout and never compete with the joy that these Christmas treasures will bring.

1. A Christmas Carol (2009)

Kicking things off with an absolute classic. Charles Dickens’s much-loved story about Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean-spirited old man who hates Christmas, just makes us love it even more. Ebenezer is visited by four different ghosts each with a lesson on how to live a better life and be less of a misery guts. With all the trimmings of Disney animation and a stellar cast, this will leave you feeling stuffed with gratitude for all the simple things in life.

2. The Holiday (2006)

LA, London, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet. There are four reasons to like it already. When Iris (Kate) and Amanda (Cameron) swap houses just before Christmas to escape their disastrous love lives, romance blossoms in the form of Graham (Jude Law) and Miles (Jack Black) With beautiful settings, from Iris’s dreamy countryside cottage to Amanda’s sunny mansion, this gorgeous story reminds us love can be found in unexpected places. Enjoy every moment, this one feels like it’s over way too fast. A bit like Christmas!

3. The Elf (2003)

Quite possibly Will Ferrell’s best-ever role, this wonderful holiday classic will have you laughing into your mince pies. Buddy (Will) is an overgrown elf who is transported to the North Pole as a toddler by mistake- oops! Realising he doesn’t fit in he travels to New York to find his real Father, a stern businessman who reluctantly starts to build a relationship with his son. This much-loved Christmas classic will make your heart melt and belly hurt with warmth and humour. An oldie, but a goodie.

4. Love Actually (2003)

Another one about love, though it seems at Christmas we can’t get enough of the stuff. Nine stories set in London explore the tricky emotion that connects us all. Against the backdrop of Christmas, we watch a lively cast, from Hugh Grant to Martine Mccutcheon, navigate their complicated love lives. Or perhaps overcomplicate love in a way only we humans can- you decide. Be prepared, this one will leave you wanting more.

5. Home Alone (1990)

Is it even Christmas without watching this at least once? Eight-year-old Kevin is left to fend for himself when his family accidentally leave him behind over Christmas. What starts as heaps of fun (having the house to himself, limitless pizza and jumping on his parent’s bed) quickly gets out of hand when two burglars try to rob his house on Christmas Eve. If there’s a movie to make you appreciate your family this one is it. They may not be perfect, though you wouldn’t have them any other way.
