Reading before bed may help you unwind, and one short trial found improved self-reported sleep quality compared with not reading. Choose something you enjoy, read comfortably and stop when you feel sleepy. It is a bedtime habit to try, not a guaranteed sleep aid or a replacement for help with persistent sleep problems.
One more chapter, then lights out. It sounds harmless enough - until the clock says midnight and the plot has other ideas. But can reading before bed actually help you sleep, or is that simply a comforting story?
According to Panda London's 2026 Sleep Report, 29% of respondents said they read before turning out the lights. It is a familiar bedtime habit, but popularity alone does not tell us whether it helps us sleep.
Does reading before bed help you sleep?
A seven-night randomised trial published in 2021 found that 42% of participants who provided follow-up data in the reading group reported improved sleep quality, compared with 28% in the group asked not to read before bed.
The findings are encouraging, but the study was short and relied on people's own reports. Not everyone completed it, and more participants dropped out of the reading group. The results do not establish whether any benefit would last beyond that week.
Overall, reading appears to be a potentially helpful bedtime habit, rather than a one-size-fits-all sleep fix.
Why might reading help you wind down?
A quiet setting and a comfortable reading position can make the transition from a busy day feel a little gentler. The NHS includes reading something you enjoy among its suggestions for relaxing before bed.
Repeated regularly, a short reading session may become a familiar cue that it is time to wind down. A chapter also gives you a possible stopping point, unlike a feed that keeps refreshing. Of course, the next plot twist may have other ideas - which is where a bookmark comes in.
Printed book, e-reader, phone or audiobook?
A paperback, an e-reader and a phone can all put a story in your hands, but the experience is not quite the same. Screen brightness, notifications and your own comfort are worth considering.
Here's a quick summary of the pros and cons of your evening reading options:
Printed book
Pros: A printed book has no glowing display or incoming notifications. With comfortable lighting and a reading position that suits you, it offers a simple way to leave messages and scrolling behind.
Cons: A gripping story can still keep you reading past bedtime. Choose lighting that makes the page easy to read, get comfortable and keep a sensible stopping point in mind.
E-reader
Pros: A whole library of books on one portable device is very convenient, especially when travelling.
Cons: Screen type and brightness matter. A small laboratory study published online in 2014 compared an iPad used as an e-reader with a printed book. In 12 healthy young adults, reading on the light-emitting screen delayed the body clock and reduced alertness the following morning.
Participants read for around four hours each evening, with the device set to maximum brightness. That is not a direct test of every e-reader or a short bedtime session. Consider your screen type and settings rather than treating every device as the same.
Phone or tablet
Pros: You can pick up your reading wherever you are, without carrying another book or device.
Cons: Bright screens and incoming notifications can make it harder to wind down. Messages, work emails and social apps can turn a few pages into a much longer session. If your phone is your preferred way to read, silence notifications, choose your reading in advance and avoid unnecessarily bright settings.
Audiobook
Pros: An audiobook can be a relaxing alternative to reading. It lets you settle in without staring at a screen or scanning a page, and can fit neatly into a relaxing routine.
Cons: A lively narrator or absorbing story may keep you listening beyond your intended bedtime. Notice whether the narration helps you unwind or leaves you waiting for the next chapter. A sleep timer can give the session a natural endpoint.

How long should you read before bed?
There is no perfect amount of time to spend reading before bed. One night, 15 minutes may feel long enough; on another, you might prefer 30. Choose a short session that you can comfortably fit into your evening.
The 2021 trial tested 15 to 30 minutes of reading, but did not establish an ideal duration. Treat it as a starting point, not a target you have to reach.
Whatever you decide, do not let reading eat into the time you need for sleep. If you regularly stay up later because you cannot put a book down, try reading earlier in the evening.
If bedtime keeps slipping because the evening feels like your only personal time, our guide to revenge bedtime procrastination explores that pattern in more detail.
If you feel sleepy before the chapter ends or your timer sounds, put the book down. The next page will still be there tomorrow.
What should you read?
Choose something you enjoy and find easy to put down. How a book makes you feel matters more than choosing a particular genre.
Here are a few things to consider when choosing what to read:
- Avoid anything work-related
- Skip distressing or particularly stimulating content
- If a book keeps you awake, save it for earlier in the evening
- Notice whether the story leaves you feeling settled or eager to keep going
Should you read in bed?
Reading in bed may feel comfortable, but if you regularly spend long periods awake or frustrated there, try reading in a comfortable chair instead. Put the book down and return to bed when you feel sleepy, rather than trying to force sleep.
The NHS recommends getting up for a relaxing activity if you cannot sleep, then returning to bed when you feel sleepy. The aim is to make bed a place for rest, not somewhere you feel you have to work at falling asleep.
How to build a bedtime reading ritual
The best bedtime rituals are the ones you can stick to. Here are some simple steps that can help you build a repeatable routine:
- Choose the book before the evening begins. Spend the time reading rather than deciding what to read.
- Set a cue to start winding down. It could be brushing your teeth, making a caffeine-free drink or simply turning off the ‘big light’.
- Use comfortable, low lighting. Soften the room's lighting, but keep enough light on the page to read comfortably.
- Put the phone on silent or out of reach. This reduces interruptions and the temptation to give in to another scroll. If you are reading or listening on your phone, silence notifications instead.
- Read for a manageable period. Try 15 to 30 minutes if that suits your evening, but stop sooner when you feel sleepy.
-
Stop at a planned point or when you feel sleepy. There is no need to finish the chapter before putting the book down.

When reading may not help
Like any bedtime habit, reading doesn’t guarantee you’ll automatically fall asleep. A page-turner can keep you up later than planned, an uncomfortable reading position can make it difficult to settle, and bright light from a lamp or screen may leave you feeling more alert than relaxed.
Reading does not need to become another thing to get right. Enjoy a few pages if they help you unwind, and choose something else if they do not.
Speak to your GP if sleep problems have lasted for months, changes to your routine have not helped, or poor sleep is affecting your ability to cope with daily life. Reading is a wind-down option, not a replacement for professional support.
So, is reading before bed good for sleep?
Reading before bed may help you unwind and could support better sleep for some people. The most useful ritual is one that feels comfortable and leaves enough time for rest.
Start with a book you enjoy, enough light to read comfortably and a stopping point that suits your evening. Over time, it may become a familiar cue that the day is winding down. No reading targets and no pressure to reach the end of the chapter.
